Kayla Salisbury, Intern

I am a clinical mental health counseling intern dedicated to supporting individuals and families through life’s challenges. With a Master’s in Early Childhood Special Education and a strong background in advocacy for children with special needs, I am passionate about creating a safe and supportive space where clients feel heard and empowered.

Guided by compassion and a client-centered approach, my goal is to help you navigate burnout, parenting stress, grief, and life transitions while fostering resilience and personal growth. Together, we will work toward healing, self-discovery, and meaningful change. Your well-being matters, and I am here to support you every step of the way.

Specialized Therapeutic Approaches

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioral therapy is a psycho-social intervention that aims to improve mental health. CBT focuses on challenging and changing cognitive distortions and behaviors, improving emotional regulation, and the development of personal coping strategies that target solving current problems.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Views the family as an interconnected system, where changes in one part of the system can affect everyone else. The therapy focuses on improving communication, resolving conflicts, and understanding the roles each family member plays. By addressing patterns of behavior and interactions within the family, family systems therapy helps families work together to build healthier, more supportive relationships. It’s particularly helpful for parent-child relationships, co-parenting issues, and family members navigating challenges like special education needs or mental health struggles.

Person-Centered

This approach emphasizes a nonjudgmental, empathetic, and supportive environment where clients are encouraged to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. The therapist’s role is to actively listen and provide unconditional positive regard, helping clients feel valued and understood. This approach trusts that clients have the innate ability to find solutions to their challenges, with the therapist acting as a guide to facilitate self-discovery, personal growth, and empowerment.

Areas of Interest

Parenting

Parenting comes with unique challenges, especially when raising a child with special needs or navigating family transitions. My approach focuses on strengthening parent-child relationships, improving communication, and providing emotional support for families facing behavioral challenges, co-parenting struggles, or the complexities of special education advocacy. By creating a safe and understanding space, I help parents and caregivers build confidence, reduce stress, and foster a healthier family dynamic.

Stress Management

Chronic stress and burnout can take a toll on mental and physical well-being, especially for parents, caregivers, and educators juggling multiple responsibilities. I help clients identify sources of stress, develop healthy coping strategies, and set boundaries to create a more sustainable balance. Through a client-centered and strengths-based approach, I guide individuals toward self-care, resilience, and emotional renewal, allowing them to show up for themselves and their loved ones more fully.

Self-Empowerment

Navigating mental health challenges, family struggles, or the education system can leave people feeling unheard or powerless. I help clients find their voice, set boundaries, and advocate for their own needs and the needs of their children—whether in schools, healthcare, or personal relationships. Through self-empowerment strategies, confidence-building, and effective communication skills, I support individuals in taking charge of their mental well-being, fostering stronger self-advocacy and resilience in every aspect of life.
